New Cumnock - Joseph Wilson - John Jamieson - John Humphry - Carsgailoch Hill

Carsgailoch Hill is on the farm of Dalgig on the west boundary of New Cumnock. It was here in 1685 that a group of covenanters were returning from a conventicle at Carsphairn when they were surprised by a company of Highland soldiers under the command of Colonel James Douglas. They were captured and asked to swear allegiance to the King but this they refused and so were shot and their bodies left unburied on the hill. Their names were Joseph Wilson, James Jamieson and John Humphrey. Hugh Hutchison from Dalgig had witnessed the execution and after the soldiers had left went with companions and buried the bodies at the spot where they were shot. A small stone was erected to the memory to the three covenanters. In 1827 a new monument was erected on the same spot, it is enclosed by a low wall with an iron railing. The remains of the old stone can also be seen in the enclosure.
